Appalachian Trail (AT) Backpack & Hike Trip - Shenandoah area
April 17-21, 2017
Join us for 4 or 5 days of spring backpacking and hiking in the central section of Shenandoah National Park. The trek is planned along a section of the Blue Ridge
crest on the Appalachian Trail between Swift Run Gap and Thornton Gap. The "off season" is a good time of year for this trip which meanders through the most
widely used part of the Park. This is a very scenic section of trail. The pace will be leisurely allowing time to enjoy the gorgeous views from the many summits,
rock outcrops and overlooks along the way. There's options for side trips to a waterfall or two as well. Expect spring conditions with spring flowers and leaves
emerging, warm days, cool nights, dry trails, and hopefully, sunshine and blue skies! This trip is best suited for those with some backpacking and camping
experience. Daily treks will range between 6.5 to 9.5 miles. One should be in good physical condition to enjoy the journey. Backpacks, lightweight camping
gear & trail meals can be provided if desired. Space is limited to 4 people. There are two spaces left. Reservations are necessary by March 26, 2017. Thank you.
The tentative plan is to "meet & greet" Sunday afternoon (4/16) to check gear and pack. We will be shuttled to the starting point after breakfast on Monday (4/17).
The 4-day trip will end at Skyland Resort on Thursday afternoon (4/20). Those opting for the 5-day trip will enjoy a night of lodging at Skyland Resort. Friday's plan
is to day hike the vista filled 9.5 mile section of the AT to Thornton Gap. We expect to come off the trail Friday afternoon (4/21). Please note that dinner and breakfast
meals associated with lodging Sunday and Thursday are not included in these trip packages. We plan to dine out. Each person will be responsible for paying for their own meals.
