Gidget was an adorable, well-mannered Australian Shepard and Black Lab
mix. She joined Lynn on the trail in March 1997, at the age of 12
weeks and developed into an amazing trail dog. The Lynn & Gidget
team was the beginnings of Adirondack Connections Guide Service. Gidget's herding
instincts were evident on hiking and backpacking trips. She did a great job keeping a group
together and the bears away. (Yes... there are bears in our neck of the
Adirondacks.) Gidget was on-leash when on wilderness excursions, wherever
required by regulation (and sometimes for her own safety), usually
attached to the belt of Lynn's pack. She didn't seem to mind one bit.
In fact, one could say Gidget and her Mom were quite attached
(more ways than one!)
Gidget
weighed 45 pounds and when hiking or backpacking, she carried up to
10 pounds of gear including our First Aid
supplies. She also shared Lynn's sleeping quarters, whatever they
happened to be. During the winter months she wore fleece booties to keep
snowballs from forming between her pads. She wasn't particularly fond of
them but she learned tolerance... Anything not to be left behind!
Gidget was often the center of attention in her travels. Lynn
says, "People always stopped me on
the trail just to inquire about the contents of her pack or to tell me
how cute she was. Once in awhile I had to apologize for Gidget's
unsociable behavior, as she was so 'full of business' that she walked right on by the people who
had stopped to visit with
her."
Gidget
inherited her father's water instincts. Upon spending time with she and
Lynn and you would have noticed that she enjoyed being in the water as much as
being in the woods. In fact, Lynn packed anything that Gidget carried in
doubled ziplock bags including their tent. When out on a paddle, Gidget
wore a life jacket so she was visible to others when she was in the water.
Lynn misses her very much. Gidget was an outstanding trail dog and Lynn's
faithful, loving companion. Lynn learned many of life's most precious
lesson's through Gidget and their adventures together, on & off the
trail. Her love & spirit continue to guide Lynn and Adirondack
Connections.
